We have done unique work in recent weeks, dissecting the financials of TSMC and Intel to help investors understand 1) how the latter could outsource to the former, with what implications on its competitiveness and cost structure, and 2) Why we see TSMC in such a strong and defensible position. We leveraged this work to answer the above key question: Could Intel split in two, with a fabless design entity on one side, and a foundry on the other side. The idea is appealing, and is part of the routes the incoming activist investor would want to consider.

We have an edge on IT spending, accurately following spending trends with a rigorous bottom up approach every quarter. Based on that and looking back at how the pandemic affected patterns, we come to a counter consensual view: amongst legacy payers, those most exposed to discretionary and on-prem-related spending are likely to do well. In that group, we have a particular conviction on Cisco, most exposed to a recovery, likely to beat expectations and with a very attractive valuation.

As a follow up to the piece we published two weeks ago looking into the economics of Intel outsourcing leading edge laptop CPUs to TSMC, we published on Friday a piece last week looking at how the move would position Intel from a competitive standpoint. We debunk first some widely-held beliefs about node comparison between Intel and TSMC, and the timing of their introduction for x86 chips. Second, we go over how node leadership vs. manufacturing differentiation matters for different chips, and how timing matters, by product segment. Based on these observations, we conclude with a timeline of what we expect to happen, in which we clearly see Intel strengthening its competitive position, from the low point of 2020, and beyond the initial improvement we expect to materialize in 2021.

Between Covid-19 and the election, little appears certain about what the next year holds in US telecommunications policy. On some issues, such as Title I or II, or a nationalized 5G network, there appear to be stark differences. On others, such as spectrum, the differences are more nuanced. There appears to be a consensus that the digital divide must be bridged but no consensus on how to do so. On a host of consumer protection issues there is a wide variation and telecom regulation will inevitably be affected by the wave of legal and policy attacks now underway against Big Tech. We'll have three guests with extensive experience with the FCC (working for both Democrats and Republicans) and the general environment in DC. They will help us understand what is and isn't worth worrying about for the next year of telecoms regulation, depending on who wins, and what issues we may be overlooking as the interplay of technology, markets and politics transforms the policy makers' agenda.
